About the Buccament Bay Galleon Restaurant Ship

To see photographs of the Galleon under construction, please click here
|
The Western coast of St Vincent is no stranger to having its beauty portrayed on film, the Disney films 'Pirates of the Caribbean' were shot in the next bay along from Buccament Bay and the third is currently being shot on the island and is due for release later this year. St Vincent will undoubtedly benefit from a greater public awareness with these major releases. In keeping with The Pirates of The Caribbean theme, we have commissioned a ‘pirate galleon’ to be built and moored in Buccament Bay. The Galleon will be used as a floating restaurant for the sole use of the Buccament Bay Resort. The vessel will be 38m long, with an 8m beam. She will have a gun deck, main deck and poop deck, and two masts. Although she will be rigged ‘gaff’ style (i.e. with the sails in line with the boat) for the voyage, her main masts and square-rigging will be erected when she reaches St Vincent. Construction is being carried out in the traditional hand-built method used in Indonesia for centuries, on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, which is one of the last places on earth that ships of this size are still built from solid timber. Construction started in February of this Year, and the expected launch date is November, although much of the finishing work will take several more months, and will be done partly on the 5-month voyage to the Caribbean, and partly on site at Buccament Bay. It is also worth noting that, although we refer to this vessel as a ‘pirate galleon’, there really was no such thing. The pirates of 17th & 18th century in this area used whatever vessels they could get their hands on, (mostly stolen) and usually went for smaller, faster vessels than this one. However, the common perception nowadays of a pirate ship is based upon the ‘black pearl’ from the movie. | ||
